A world leading SME near Truro has benefited from nearly £20,000 of European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) that will drive revenue and cut costs.

Grinding Solutions, a mineral processing consultancy and laboratory run by husband and wife Nick and Felicity Wilshaw, has set the world standard within niche markets in the mining sector.

The Tresillian-based company has gained funding from the BIG 2 project, an investment programme delivered by Cornwall Development Company.

Their project is set to create two new high skilled employment opportunities for the Cornish economy. The funding has enabled investment into two pieces of equipment - a specialist microscope that takes images of grinding media and ore samples, and an X-ray Fluorescent Analyser (XRF), which can quickly analyse a rock sample.

Director Felicity Wilshaw explains that both pieces of equipment will enable the company to offer new services and turn around mineral analysis more efficiently and keep more processes in-house, making their service more cost effective, reducing cost of sales and enabling a faster turnaround for their clients.

She said: “We hear that competitors elsewhere in the world can take up to nine months to complete a project, and we can be much faster than that.

“We are expecting this investment to increase our revenue whilst making our work more profitable and efficient.”

Founder Nick Wilshaw, who started his career as a mineral processor after studying at Camborne School of Mines, has an international network of clients. The company specialises in exploring smart and innovative approaches for mineral liberation to help their clients maximize their value and opportunities as well as minimizing the environmental impact and meeting the ever increasing global challenges the mining industry now faces. It has become a world leader in ultrafine grinding and the specific area of ceramic grinding media testing for evaluating the best methods and materials to grind minerals.

This global expertise has attracted a strong calibre of highly talented staff and enabled Grinding Solutions to create high value roles in the company’s laboratory. The company’s growth is also expected to generate another office based role.

Programme manager Brent Treloar said: “This project is a great fit for our investment because it will create two new highly skilled, specialist roles. We’re actively on the look-out for other innovative businesses like Grinding Solutions that are trading nationally and internationally, that can drive skilled job creation and create a step change in their business from our investment.”

BIG 2 is delivered by Cornwall Development Company and funded by the European Regional Development Fund(ERDF). It aims to support 200 businesses in Cornwall with growth projects, and create 360 jobs by 2018.
